Operation: Climate Control Game

game

Database Image:

This multi-player computer game challenges players to manage environmental policy to reduce carbon emissions for Europe through the 21st century, while also meeting the nation’s transportation and electricity needs. Players choose from an array of options that become limited by available funds as the game progresses. Short descriptions of the choices inform players before they make each decision. A quiz about climate change appears at the end of each game level. Also included is an opinion survey at the beginning and end of the game. Designed for use in the classroom, this game focuses on England, but the information can be applied elsewhere as well. Teachers can set up a password that students can use to play a game as a team.

The game forces players to balance costs with demand (e.g. for electricity) while reducing carbon levels. A second level of the game takes place later in the future, in 2050 and in 2100, when it is more difficult to achieve balance. Teachers are given information for classroom use.
